In the week of March 13th to 17th, NOVA Medical School will once again join the Brain Awareness Week, in partnership with the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies, the Dana Foundation and the Portuguese Society for Neuroscience.
In the 2023 edition of the Brain Awareness Week, NOVA Medical School will promote face-to-face interactive activities, under the theme "Can We Keep Our Brains Healthy to Live Better and Longer?".
With the purpose of explaining how the brain works, how brain diseases happen and the importance of an active and healthy life for brain aging, the NMS will host actions in two different formats:
- Science Fair at two public hight schools in Lisbon, Escola D. Filipa de Lencastre and Escola Pedro Nunes;
- Pop-up Centre at the Health Museum in Lisbon, especially tailored for the senior citizens in Lisbon.
The activities will comprise brief lectures, interactive demonstrations, “speed-dating” with scientists, and games about the brain to showcase NMS scientists most recent research in neurosciences.
Among the topics that we will address in an informal and relaxed environment, we highlight: how neurons develop; neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, and their association with other diseases such as type-2 diabetes, and therefore, how good nutrition habits may prevent or delay the progression to both dementia and motor problems.
NOVA Medical School's activities to celebrate the Brain Awareness Week will be funded for the first time, through a grant by the FENS-Brain Awareness Week Program, which will allow the development of better, more didactic, activities that will have a positive impact in our community, promoting the visibility of neurosciences, and connecting scientists and society.
The Brain Awareness Week is a global annual initiative of Dana Foundation to foster public enthusiasm and support for brain science, and raise awareness of the importance and the impact brain science has on our everyday lives.
