Picture_Highlighed Project (Effects of EDCs i_ana.faria@nms.unl.pt

  • 2008 (on going) – Effects of EDCs in metabolic dysfunction

Our work includes the focus on EDCs as responsible for increased metabolic dysfunction in obese adult individuals and their effect on decreased metabolic improvement after bariatric surgery, as well as on EDCs effects in children and how to intervene for exposure reduction. To further understand the mechanistic basis of environmental causes of metabolic dysfunction, we conduct an integrative and multidisciplinary research approach with the inclusion of basic, clinical and population studies. This approach will help public health authorities and ultimately health professional recommendations, empowering them with new evidence-based tools grounded in a comprehensive assessment of exposure and biomarkers of effect.

  • 2019 (on going) – IoMum cohort
    ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT04010708

Brief Summary:
Data from 2007 regarding iodine status among Portuguese pregnant women indicate this is an iodine deficient population group, with only 16.8% presenting adequate urinary iodine values. IoMum emerges from this context to monitor and update iodine status in Portuguese pregnant women and to evaluate the effectiveness of the above policy by assessing clinical compliance to iodine supplementation and the impact of iodine supplementation in this vulnerable group. IoMum will update data on iodine nutrition in Portuguese pregnant women, promoting political actions towards the elimination of iodine deficiency and thus to the reduction of nutritional, social and economic inequalities.

Picture_Highlighed Project (iogeneration coho_ana.faria@nms.unl.pt

  • 2015 (on going) – IoGeneration cohort
    ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02608138

Brief Summary:
It is well known that insufficient iodine intakes impairs the production of thyroid hormones, essential for cognitive development and healthy growth.
It is estimated that one in three school age children remain iodine deficient worldwide. Whereas there is no mandatory iodisation programs in Portugal, young infants are among the most vulnerable to iodine deficiency due to their special requirements.
Therefore, this study aims to evaluate iodine status in school age Portuguese children (6-12y), compare iodine status in children, cognitive outcomes and thyroid health and monitor the use of iodised salt in school canteens exploring potential implications in children's iodine status.
