Designed for healthcare students from higher education institutions, the Healthcare Innovation course explores the latest trends and advances in healthcare innovation, discovering how technology is revolutionizing the medical landscape.

Two distinct courses:

Culinary Medicine

Nutrition is a vital part of lifestyle medicine, which not only prevents disease, but is an integral part of the treatment and management of many chronic illnesses. The Culinary Medicine program at Summer Medical School aims to offer an evidence-based pedagogical approach that combines knowledge of biochemistry and metabolism with human nutrition and food, materializing in hands-on learning on how to make concrete nutritional and food recommendations suitable for different individuals and chronic diseases. Through hands-on learning in NOVA Medical School's Kitchen Lab, participants are trained to make concrete and appropriate nutritional and dietary recommendations for different chronic diseases, constituting an effective strategy that will enable the future professional to have specific skills to provide individualized education. This course prepares its participants to move away from the hypothetical and take a person-centered approach to their needs: "What can I eat to improve my health? And my illness?" It is a fundamental tool in the face of the challenges posed by society and aims to keep pace with the evolution of medicine, taking into account the concept of 4P's medicine - Predictive, Preventive, Personalized and Participatory.
The program also includes a research component, allowing participants to interact with various different experiences, researchers and experts in different areas.

Why is this course designed for future health professionals?
The teaching of nutrition in medical schools has been a topic of debate in the United States since the 1980s and has led to profound changes in the medical curricula of important American medical schools. In Europe, this reflection is more recent and in Portugal it has already been the subject of discussion. NOVA Medical's strategic vision includes curricular changes aimed at transferring skills in the area of Nutrition and Human Nutrition in medical training, which makes it a national leader. In this alignment, and similar to what already happens in international medical schools, hands-on teaching of pathophysiology, molecular mechanisms of disease and nutritional and pharmacological therapy, makes health professionals more competent in managing information and able to teach therapy to patients.
Therefore, knowledge about the influence of nutrition and diet on the prevention, management and treatment of this type of disease is fundamental in medical training. What's more, it's important for doctors to be able to pass on this knowledge in simple recommendations that are appropriate to their clinical context.
