NOVA Medical School Full Professor wins the NOVA Research Impact Narratives Challenge 2024

Miguel Seabra, Full Professor and researcher at NOVA Medical School, was recently honored as one of the winners of the second edition of the NOVA Research Impact Narratives Challenge 2024. This initiative aims to provide all faculty and researchers at Universidade NOVA de Lisboa the opportunity to craft narratives that clearly and accessibly communicate the real impact of their research and its direct consequences for society.

In this edition of the competition, 12 narratives from several scientific fields were selected for their compelling demonstration of the profound societal influence of research conducted at NOVA. The awards ceremony took place during the NOVA Science & Innovation Day on December 3 at the NOVA Rectorate.

According to Professor Miguel Seabra, principal investigator of the Molecular Mechanisms of Disease research group at NOVA Medical School, "Such achievements are always the result of a team effort, and I must take this opportunity to express my deep appreciation for the dedicated team with whom I have worked throughout the years, as well as for the invaluable contribution of the patients themselves which supported this project at critical times. I am deeply honored to have contributed to making a difference in the lives of patients and advancing this field. I hope this work inspires young scientists to pursue their passions and explore new frontiers in science, as together we continue to turn hope into reality," the researcher said to NOVA Science magazine about this recognition.

Professor Seabra’s awarded work in this competition, titled “Twenty Years from Gene Identification to Therapeutic Intervention,” stems from over 22 years of research and preclinical studies, with groundbreaking discoveries in the field of gene therapy for rare retinal diseases.

Notably, in 2024, Professor Seabra was also honored by the European Society for Pigment Cell Research (ESPCR) with the ESPCR 2024 Award, which recognizes and celebrates senior scientists who have made outstanding contributions to pigment cell research. The award was presented during the 25th ESPCR conference in Marseille, held from October 15 to 18.

This year, Miguel Seabra was also recognized by the Portuguese Biochemistry Society with the Career Award Lecture during the XXII National Biochemistry Congress at the University of Aveiro. This accolade acknowledges the excellence and impact of his work throughout his career.
