NOVA Medical School PhD student, Akiko Teshima, of the Metabolic Diseases Research group, led by Paula Macedo, was recently awarded the Young Investigator Award 2024 during the Joint Meeting of the MASLD (Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Steatotic Liver Disease) and EGIR (European Group for the Study of Insulin Resistance) Study Groups.
The awarded oral presentation, titled “Deciphering a Novel Mechanism of Insulin Resistance: Circular Dorsal Ruffles and Insulin Receptor Trafficking in Hepatocytes”, stood out for describing a novel mechanism of insulin resistance in hepatocytes, the primary liver cells.
This achievement by the PhD student and endocrinologist Akiko Teshima highlights the relevance of the study for the areas discussed at the meeting, as well as reinforces the quality and excellence of the research developed at NOVA Medical School.
The MASLD-EGIR Study Group Meeting took place from December 4th to 6th in Lille, France, bringing together leading experts and researchers to explore the latest advancements in understanding the pathogenesis of metabolic-associated liver diseases and its connection to insulin resistance and type-2 diabetes.
