A team of researchers, including members of NOVA Medical School, is developing a cationic surfactant-based hydrogel that has shown efficacy against Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the bacterium that causes gonorrhea.
The development of this hydrogel, published in an article available here, showed a significant reduction in Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection in experimental models, revealing potential for future development as an antimicrobial treatment.
The project is currently in the pre-clinical phase, which in this case means that tests have already been carried out on animal models, but it is still necessary to continue the research and testing to confirm the safety and efficacy of the treatment.
