NOVA Medical School participated in the latest edition of the NOVA Science & Innovation Day 2024. This initiative, which celebrates the excellence of research and innovation at NOVA, was themed this year around talent, interdisciplinarity, and the impact of science and innovation produced at the University.
The event program, held on December 3 at the Rectorate of Universidade Nova de Lisboa, included presentations of research projects, announcements of new funding opportunities, discussions about the impact of Artificial Intelligence, awards ceremonies, and an innovation fair.
NOVA Medical School stood out during several key moments, including the presentation of the European Project PAS GRAS by Professor and researcher Sílvia Conde and the recognition of Professor and researcher Miguel Seabra with the NOVA Research Impact Narratives Challenge 2024 Award. Professor Tiago Bilhim was also acknowledged among the most cited authors in scientific publications during 2021-2023 (based on the FWCI - field-weighted citation impact).
During the scientific poster session, the school was represented by projects from three PhD students: Shamila Ismael, Rita Henriques, and Luís Cabaço, from the laboratories of Conceição Calhau, Ana Rodrigues, and Duarte Barral, respectively. Additionally, at the Innovation Fair held throughout the event, two prototype-stage technologies were showcased: NOVA DROPS - a 3D in vitro model for diabetic retinopathy, developed by researcher Sandra Tenreiro; and NOVA SKIN - in vitro models of epidermis and full skin, developed by Professor and researcher Duarte Barral in collaboration with ITQB NOVA.
The NOVA Science & Innovation Day is primarily aimed at researchers from Universidade Nova de Lisboa but also welcomes companies and investors from the national innovation ecosystem. As an Organic Unit of NOVA that leads research in health, NOVA Medical School stood out for its strong representation at the event. This highlights the School’s commitment to valuing the scientific knowledge produced and transforming it into innovative technologies and services that address current and future societal challenges and needs.
