NOVA Medical School professors reflect on the challenges and opportunities of digital transformation in health at the Science 2025 Meeting

11-Jul-2025

Professors Sérgio Laranjo and Fernando Bozza represented NOVA Medical School at the Science 2025 Meeting's parallel session, entitled 'Digital Transformation in Health: Impact on the Doctor-Patient Relationship”, organised by the Associated Laboratory for Translation and Innovation for Global Health (REAL) in partnership with the RISE Health Research Network.

Taking place at NOVA SBE, the session brought together experts from various fields for a multidisciplinary debate, promoting in-depth reflection on the impact of digitisation on clinical practice and the associated risks and benefits of adopting artificial intelligence, as well as the ethical implications arising from the evolution of the doctor–patient relationship in a digital context.

Professor Sérgio Laranjo addressed the role of artificial intelligence in clinical decision-making in his presentation, 'Leveraging artificial intelligence for risk assessment, detection and treatment decisions in cardiology', highlighting its potential to improve risk stratification and diagnostic accuracy, and contribute to more predictive and personalised medicine.

In turn, Professor Fernando Bozza's presentation, 'Skills for an Uncertain Future: Challenges, Emerging Technologies, and Strategies to Promote Professional Development in Medical Education in the Digital Age”, he emphasised the importance of medical training adapted to the digital age and the need to integrate technical and non-technical (soft) skills, such as empathy, communication and humanism, in a coordinated manner.

NOVA Medical School's participation in this initiative reinforces its commitment to innovation, scientific excellence and training healthcare professionals who are prepared to respond competently and ethically to the challenges of a profoundly digitalised ecosystem.
