Pedro Póvoa takes office as Dean of NOVA Medical School

06-Nov-2025

NOVA Medical School today marked the inauguration of its new Dean, Pedro Póvoa, in a ceremony attended by the Rector of Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Paulo Pereira.

Pedro Póvoa emphasized his commitment to serve with humility, determination, and public spirit, reaffirming that “the strength of a school is measured not only by the excellence of its knowledge, but by its ability to transform it into health, citizenship, and future.”

The Dean also highlighted the importance of placing students at the center of all decisions and strengthening the NOVA Medical School's multi-campus network—with Campo de Santana, São Francisco Xavier Hospital, the future Carcavelos campus, C3 in Alcabideche, and the Local Health Units of Western Lisbon and São José.

During the session, the new management team was also introduced, which will take charge of the three strategic pillars of NOVA Medical School:

The pillar of Education, led by Professor Pedro Carreiro Martins, PhD, who is also President of the Pedagogical Council, will be the driving force behind pedagogical quality, curricular innovation, and the valorization of teachers.

The Research pillar, under the leadership of Professor Paula Macedo, will continue to affirm NOVA Medical School as a leading scientific school, producing knowledge with a real impact on the healthcare system, clinical practice, and society.

The Community pillar, led by Professor Ana Moita Macedo, PhD, will reinforce the strategic dimension of NOVA Medical School's mission to connect the School to the healthcare system and society through services and measurable impact.

The new leadership reinforces the vision of a School of the Future, based on three pillars—Teaching, Research, and Community—and a common purpose: to transform knowledge into action and science into the common good.

Professor Roberto Palma dos Reis takes on the role of President of the Scientific Council and will bring his experience and rigor to ensure the academic excellence and scientific quality that distinguish the School.

Dr. Paulo Bastos will be the Executive Director, whose experience and strategic vision have been decisive in defining a more integrated and sustainable management model.

The focus on innovation, sustainability, and social impact, as well as on valuing the people who build the School on a daily basis, will mark this new stage for NOVA Medical School.

The future of NOVA Medical School is not built solely on plans or buildings. It is built in every class, every project, every gesture that translates knowledge into health and health into the common good.
