21-Apr-2023

The World Earth Day is celebrated annually on April 22 with the aim of promoting the protection of the Planet and raising awareness of the importance of preserving natural resources.

In this context, this date was chosen to start the planting of the NMS Vegetable Garden and, essentially, to do it in community, since the NMS Vegetable Garden is an All-for-All initiative, for a healthier and more sustainable life! Today were planted aromatic herbs in a lively session attended by members of the community and, in the future, other species will be planted. The NMS Vegetable Garden is part of the Summer Medical School: Lifestyle project and is created in partnership with the National Institute of Agricultural and Veterinary Research (Instituto Nacional de Investigação Agrária e Veterinária - INIAV) and the Lisbon City Council.

Conceição Calhau, NMS Vice-Dean for Community Extension and responsible for Sustainability at NMS, took the opportunity to highlight the growing awareness of the impact of the environment on health and the repercussion of human manipulation of the environment.

During this session, there was also a lecture by Afonso Noutel, representative of Sociedade Ponto Verde, with the aim of making the entire community aware of the importance and advantages of recycling for Planet Earth.

This initiative was attended by Júlia Seixas, Pro-Rector of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, who coordinates the sustainability area at NOVA, Rosa Couto, Gentil Rocha e Márcia Amiel, representing CML, and also Elvira Ferreira e Graça Palha, professors at INIAV.
