Professor Paula Macedo elected to the ESCI Council

Our researcher and Professor Maria Paula Macedo was recently elected as a member of the Council of the European Society for Clinical Investigation (ESCI).

The assignment of this new position on the ESCI Council took place on June 9, 2022, during the Annual Scientific Meeting of the European Society for Clinical Research in Bari, Italy. We spoke with Professor Paula Macedo, principal investigator of the MEDIR group and Professor at NOVA Medical School, about this appointment to the ESCI Board and what it means for clinical research in Portugal.

  • What does this distinction mean to you?

It is a commitment for European clinical research to have a Portuguese councillor on the board of the European Society for Clinical Research.

  • What will this nomination entail?

I will contribute to a further professionalization of the ESCI Council, in order to fulfil the vision of the society. It is important that ESCI constantly works at a tactical European and world level, formulate a clear strategy for the next years and, in addition, support it's implementation.

  • Does it open new doors/new possibilities?

I envision a need for an intensified collaboration with relevant stakeholders to achieve the vision of ESCI, for example, a collaboration with other European societies and also the embracement of patients associations such that they will have a voice and we better understand their needs. Also to help the implementation of a Translational Science Academy in the development of a program for future talented researchers bridging basic and clinical research.
