On June 27, between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., NOVA Medical School will hold the award ceremony for the Ana Lázaro Prize - Cancer Research Scholarship 2025, which this year will feature the special presence of Robert Langer, one of the most influential scientists of our time and Institute Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) - the institution's highest academic honor.
His pioneering work has benefited millions of people around the world. Among his most notable contributions are the isolation of the first angiogenesis inhibitors (in collaboration with Dr. Judah Folkman), which paved the way for new treatments for cancer and blindness. He was also responsible for creating the first nanoparticles and microparticles for administering large molecules, including nucleic acids, and played a decisive role in establishing tissue engineering, with applications such as artificial skin for burn victims and “organ-on-a-chip” technology.
The Ana Lázaro Cancer Research Grant aims to promote interdisciplinary translational research projects in the field of cancer, developed by teams from NOVA Medical School. It is funded by the family of Ana Lázaro, an acclaimed Spanish dancer and choreographer who, in her will, left part of her legacy to advance cancer research.
The 2025 edition marks the second award of this grant, which represents total support of 210,000 euros, to be distributed among three research projects (one per year, between 2024 and 2026), each worth 70,000 euros.
