Gerard Ryle, Richard Roberts, Aaron Ciechanover, Sameera Chukkapalli, Erden Eruç, Alexandra Palt, and João de Macedo are some of the first speakers confirmed at the 8th edition of the Estoril Conferences, on September 1st and 2nd.
The first speakers of the Estoril Conferences that will take place on September 1st and 2nd, at Nova SBE's Carcavelos Campus are already known. Gerard Ryle, Director of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) and winner of over 50 international awards, including an Emmy and a Pulitzer Prize in 2017, won as a team, will participate on the very first day of the event, sharing his experience in the field of investigative journalism and the contribution of true journalism to build a fairer and more equitable society.
Sir Richard Roberts, winner of the 1993 Nobel Prize in Medicine and Aaron Ciechanover, winner of the 2004 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, are part of the debates at the two-day conference, contributing with their experiences to the discussion on how poverty and climate change can influence access to health care and intervene in the mental health conditions of the world's population. Sir Richard Roberts, more specifically, will defend how Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) can contribute decisively to the fight against hunger in geographies such as the African continent, a position that is defended by 155 Nobel Prizes.
These three internationally recognised names are joined by Sameera Chukkapalli, Leader of the Obama Foundation, and Erden Eruç, the first person to complete a human-powered circumnavigation of
Earth, alone. Both will take the stage to help reflect on how to stop the devastation of Earth, as well as discuss ways of cooperation for joint action in defence of communities and the planet's natural resources.
Another name already confirmed is Alexandra Palt, from L'Oreal Foundation. A lawyer by training, Alexandra has specialised in human rights and worked for International Amnesty in Germany. João de Macedo will be another important speaker. A big wave surfer with an international reputation, he is an environmentalist and co-founder of the Save The Waves Coalition.
"The Estoril Conferences have a very important role in inspiring all generations and challenge us, as strategic communities of society, to build a better, fairer and more equitable world. We are committed to raise awareness among all generations and to increase critical thinking about the realities around us, especially among the youngest, as only in this way can we collaborate to change the world, which is so urgently needed" says the Executive Director of the Estoril Conferences, Laurinda Alves, adding "we want to be one of the engines of change by exploring new paths for a more sustainable and humane future".
