Ana Lázaro - Cancer Research Grant aims to stimulate translational research developed by interdisciplinary teams at NOVA Medical School.

This initiative is funded by the family of Ana Lázaro, an acclaimed Spanish dancer and choreographer who, in her legacy, set aside part of her estate to advance research in the field of Cancer.

The Ana Lázaro - Cancer Research Grant aims to contribute to the advancement of knowledge about cancer, improve health care and services related to oncological diseases, increase the quality of life of cancer patients and promote internal collaboration between NOVA Medical School's biomedical and clinical teams.

The grant has a total budget of €210,000 (two hundred and ten thousand euros), which will be distributed over three research projects worth €70,000 (seventy thousand euros), to be awarded in 2024, 2025 and 2026 (one project per year).

Research projects in the field of cancer will be accepted, covering aspects such as preventiondiagnosis/markerstherapyhealth care and services, and the quality of life of cancer patients and survivors.

Projects must have a maximum duration of 24 months and must be proposed by teams of biomedical and clinical researchers affiliated to NOVA Medical School. Collaborations between research groups within NOVA Medical School are encouraged, including fundamental and applied/translational research groups. The research team must identify a Principal Investigator (PI) and a Co-Principal Investigator (co-IP), and the PI must hold a PhD and have a contractual relationship with NOVA Medical School for the duration of the funded Ana Lázaro project.

Only one original project per applicant will be accepted and researchers with no affiliation to NOVA Medical School can be part of the team as collaborators/consultants but without an allocated budget.

Applications are open from February 4th, 2025, until May 9th, 2025, and must be submited in English.

  • Eligibility assessment (by NMS services): May 12 to 15, 2025
  • Evaluation Period (jury): 16 May to June 16, 2025
  • Deadline for Notification of Results (by email): June 17, 2025 onwards
  • Award Ceremony: June 27, 2025
