NOVA Medical School was represented at University College Cork (UCC), Ireland, on an academic visit that promoted the exchange of experiences in pharmacology teaching and translational research, as part of a mobility funded by the Erasmus+ programme.
The visit involved Professor Sofia Azeredo Pereira, Principal Researcher in the Renal, Cardiovascular and Metabolic Pharmacology group, and Professor Luísa Teixeira-Santos, researcher in the same group and lecturer in Pharmacology. Both took part in various initiatives organised by the Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics at UCC, including working meetings with colleagues from the School of Medicine and Health and the School of Pharmacy.
Professor Sofia Azeredo Pereira gave the lecture ‘Research inspired by drug biotransformation’, in which she addressed the impact of translational research on cardiovascular and kidney diseases, drug metabolism and biomarker discovery. The session emphasised the role of experimental pharmacology and precision medicine in responding to complex clinical challenges.
Professor Luísa Teixeira-Santos presented a seminar entitled "What is essential in Pharmacokinetics for medical students? A multidisciplinary answer", centred on the teaching of pharmacokinetics in the medical curriculum, which generated an enriching debate on teaching practices in pharmacology.
This visit was an important opportunity to strengthen academic ties between the two institutions, promoting the sharing of knowledge and experiences that contribute to the development of teaching and research in medical pharmacology.
