Twenty two students, from high school and higher education, performed scientific internships, in nine laboratories and six research infrastructures. For the youth, these internships are the very first approach to research and allow them to foster their scientific culture, raising awareness for the role of science in society's daily life, and encouraging the pursuit of scientific careers.

During these internships, under various national and international exchange programs, these students had the opportunity to interact with several researchers and technicians from NOVA Medical School from multiple areas. Namely:

The Molecular Mechanisms of Disease and Degeneration and Ageing laboratories hosted one student through the IST Summer Internship program and four students through the IFMSA - International Federation of Medical Students Associations exchanges, from Spain, Romania, Canada and Russia. Through this exchange programme, the Membrane Traffic in Disease laboratory also received a Romanian student, and Metabolic Diseases Research (MEDIR) Lab hosted three students, two indonesians and one Mexican. Through ANEEB - National Association of Biomedical Engineering Students's internships, the laboratory of Neuronal Control of Metabolic Disturbances: Therapeutic Strategies also hosted one student.

Through the summer internships organized by Ciência Viva, the Nutrition, Metabolism and Microbiota laboratory received eight students, the Histology Facility received one student, and the Microscopy and Flow Cytometry Facilities and the Fly and Cell Culture Facilities jointly received one student each.

As a prize for first place in the first COLife Hackathon, another student performed a laboratory rotation for a week in four laboratories - Integrated Pathophysiological Mechanisms, Molecular Nutrition and Health, Cancer Nanomedicine and Nutrition, Metabolism and Microbiota - representing the four research units of NMS, and in the Fish, Fly and Cell Culture Facilities, representing the Research Infrastructures.
