NMS reinforces itself as an institution of excellence, where quality research is carried out, which aims to contribute to the advancement of the field of nutrition sciences.
"Viver Saudável" Awards are intended to be an annual initiative, whose focus is to distinguish excellence and reward the best in the field of Nutrition in Portugal.
This year they were delivered at a ceremony held at Casino de Espinho, which was attended by the Nutrition Team of NOVA Medical School.
The Project, “Intermittent energy restriction ameliorates adipose tissue-associated inflammation in adults with obesity: a randomized controlled trial”, was the winner of the Project of the Year in the area of Clinical Nutrition. A project with the NOVA Medical School and Comprehensive Health Research Center seal, authored by our Master's student in Human Nutrition and Metabolism, Inês Castela, with Professor Diana Teixeira as Principal Investigator.
The results of this study showed that after 12 weeks of intervention, both interventions with intermittent or continuous energy restriction, planned with the same percentage of energy restriction, were equally effective in weight loss in adults with obesity (BMI > 35 kg/m2). Additionally, the intermittent energy restriction intervention resulted in significant improvements in reducing insulin resistance and obesity-associated inflammation compared to the continuous energy restriction intervention.
The research team believes that the results of this clinical study, integrated with current scientific knowledge and ensured by differentiated monitoring, have the potential and are relevant to optimize personalized intervention in the treatment of obesity.
Additionally, the Heroes 0 Waste Project was awarded in the Collective Food and Restoration category. This is a EUREST Portugal Project, and the award was given to Beatriz Oliveira, also a professor of the Bachelors Degree in Nutrition Sciences.
