Staff
Microscopy Facility Manager

Telmo holds a Master’s degree in Biological Engineering (2009) from Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, with a thesis on bioengineering and biotransformation completed at Università degli Studi di Milano under Prof. Francesco Molinari. Following this, Telmo joined the Instituto de Medicina Molecular as a research fellow (2009–2011), focusing on bioimage analysis of Drosophila and Zebrafish wound healing under Prof. Antonio Jacinto. In 2012, Telmo began a PhD titled “The Cell Cycle Around the Wound: When Software Meets Biology”, a collaborative effort between Instituto de Medicina Molecular, CEDOC/NOVA Medical School, and Université Pierre-et-Marie-Curie, Paris, supervised by José Rino, PhD, Prof. Antonio Jacinto, and Prof. Luís Almeida, resulting in four peer-reviewed publications and expertise in bioimage analysis, computer vision, microscopy, and systems biology.

Telmo began working as a Microscopy Facility technician at CEDOC in 2015 and, in 2019, became Facility Head. Current work focuses on developing bioimage analysis methods for microscopy and medical imaging, particularly Retina OCT imaging, as well as advancing machine and deep learning tools for image analysis. With 18 peer-reviewed publications, ~650 citations, and an H-index of 10 (Web of Science), Telmo has also supervised two Master’s students and a PhD student.

Actively engaged in science outreach and the organization of international meetings (e.g., SPAOM 2018, SPAOM 2023, CTLS 2021), Telmo contributes to Portuguese research infrastructures PPBI and PT-OPENSCREEN, as well as international initiatives Euro-BioImaging, EU-OPENSCREEN, and CTLS. Telmo chairs the PPBI Communication and Dissemination Working Group and participates in expert groups on remote access, image analysis, and training within Euro-BioImaging and CTLS.

Telmo is currently Head of the Microscopy facility at NOVA Medical School.
