Senior Medical School

Did you know that today we live longer, but with a lower quality of life?

Portugal faces a major demographic challenge: an aging population that increasingly lives with multiple chronic diseases and a low quality of life. Currently, 30% of the population residing in Portugal is over 60 years old, and this percentage continues to rise.

Given this scenario, it is essential to promote active and healthy aging, ensuring effective management of chronic diseases, preventing unnecessary hospitalizations, and guaranteeing the autonomy, well-being, and quality of life of older people.

Despite the information available, many older adults lack the practical skills and knowledge necessary to take care of their health, prevent complications, or manage their chronic conditions effectively.

This highlights a clear need for structured, accessible initiatives focused on practical application, which enable information to be transformed into action and contribute to a healthier and more independent life at all ages. This is how this project from NOVA Medical School came about—the Senior Medical School, Participative Community Program.

What is it?

Senior Medical School is a structured response to the challenge of aging and chronic diseases. It transforms information into practical health skills, aiming to foster autonomy and self-management. It also promotes prevention rather than late treatment and ensures accessibility and applicability in everyday life.

This participative community program contributes to active, healthy aging and quality of life.
