NOVA Medical School promotes workshop on "Extreme Heat and Its Impact on the Health of Older Adults"

30-Apr-2025

On April 30th at 3:00 p.m., NOVA Medical School will host the workshop "Extreme Heat and Its Impact on the Health of Older Adults" at the School’s main building. This initiative, coordinated by Ana Rodrigues, professor at NOVA Medical School, is part of the participatory community program “Ageing with Health” and is aimed at individuals aged 50 and above.

Bringing together academic and community perspectives, the workshop will also include an open class for the course unit “Older Patient” of the Integrated Master’s in Medicine. It aims to raise awareness about the effects of extreme heat on the health of older adults and to present practical strategies for prevention and adaptation to increasingly frequent climate events.

The programme will include a theatrical performance by the Arroios Senior Academy, addressing common beliefs and behaviours during heatwaves. This will be followed by a presentation led by students of the Integrated Master’s in Medicine, focused on the health impacts of extreme heat. The session will close with a roundtable discussion, encouraging the exchange of ideas and debate on preventive and mitigating measures. The round table, moderated by NOVA Medical School professor Ana Rodrigues, will include the participation of Miguel Telo Arriaga, Director of the Directorate for Disease Prevention and Health Promotion Services at the Directorate-General for Health, Marta Fournier, a specialist in General Practice, students from the Integrated Master's Degree in Medicine and students from the Arroios Senior Academy Theater Group.

This initiative has the support of CHRC - Comprehensive Health Research Centre, Lisbon AHA, Arroios Parish Council, Alegria de Viver and the “Lisbon, A City With Life For All Ages” program.

Participation is free of charge and open to the community, subject to prior registration via the following link: https://forms.office.com/e/dzw9XS6Hic
