100% integration of candidate students in PIATI'2023

19-Sep-2023

The 2023 edition of the Program for Integration of NMS Students in Research Projects  (PIATI) received a total of 11 applications from pre-graduate students at NMS who will perform internships in fundamental, clinical and translational research and article writing.

Under the coordination of Duarte Claro, a student of the Integrated Master in Medicine and a member of AENMS, out of the 11 internships to be carried out in this edition, 6 will take place at NMS and 5 at partner institutions (4 at CUF and 1 at Hospital da Luz).

The internships, which started in May of this year, are very diverse, and those conducted with NMS researchers reflect the variety of scientific research conducted at our School. The interships are listed below:

  • NMS:

- Patient Innovation

- Carotid body, our peripheral mini-brain

- Neuronal regulators of the relaxin signaling pathway

- Brain development - discovering new functions of stem cells with Drosophila

- Identification of polyphenol metabolites with potential for Parkinson's disease

- Study of lysosomal dysfunction caused by oxidized lipids present in the plasma of patients with cardiovascular disease

  • CUF:

- Post-COVID hypoxemia

- Validation of a nasal vasoconstrictor withdrawal protocol in the context of non-therapeutic abuse

- Evaluation of lymphedema in axillary procedures for breast cancer

- Effect of circadian rhythm on IT administration in lung cancer patients

  • Hospital da Luz:

- Clinical research in internal medicine/intensive care unit

Duarte Claro explains that organizing these internships "is both demanding and rewarding. We strive to involve researchers from the Faculty, both in laboratory and hospital environments, to meet the students' expectations." Duarte Claro proudly adds that "8 of the students chose NMS internships as their first choice."

This year, for the first time, applications for PIATI took place after the event “Investigação, Sim ou Não?”which brought together students from the master's program in medicine and the undergraduate program in nutrition with the research community, where some of the proposed internships for this edition were also presented.

PIATI - Program for Integration of NMS Students in Research Projects - is an initiative of AENMS (NMS Student Association) that has been taking place since 2011 with the main objective of involving undergraduate students from NMS in scientific research projects.
