NOVA Medical School reinforces commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion by creating DEI Commission

29-May-2025

In an international context characterized by worrying signs of regression in terms of human rights, particularly with regard to the rights of minorities, vulnerable or under-represented people, it is becoming urgent to strengthen the role of higher education institutions in promoting the values of democracy, inclusion and social justice.

NOVA Medical School's newly created DEI Commission will have the mission of coordinating the implementation of the DEI Policy, developing specific action plans, proposing the allocation of resources, monitoring progress through defined indicators and collecting relevant data, always with respect for privacy and confidentiality. The Commission represents a strategic effort to promote a more inclusive, equitable and representative academic and professional environment.

NOVA Medical School has consolidated its commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) by formalizing the creation of the DEI Commission and implementing its institutional policy in this area. This initiative aims to integrate in a structured and transversal way the principles of social justice, respect for difference and reduction of health inequalities in all dimensions of the school - from teaching to research, including services to the community. Initiatives like this position NOVA Medical School not only as a school of the future, but as a school committed to defending fundamental rights.

NOVA Medical School's DEI Policy prioritizes:

  • Educating health professionals for inclusive, culturally competent and ethically responsible clinical practice;
  • Promote research that analyzes the causes and consequences of health inequalities, based on scientific evidence;
  • Acting with the community, through collaborative networks with civil society organizations and policy makers, to improve access, experience and health outcomes for all populations.

In this context, the cycle of events “Talking about...” arose, as part of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Policy (DEI), with the aim of creating informal spaces for sharing, active listening and reflection on topics relevant to the academic experience. The first session on LGBTQIA+ discrimination brought together students, teachers, researchers and staff on May 28th.
