Senior Medical School

Did you know that today we live longer, but with a lower quality of life?

Portugal is facing a major demographic challenge: an aging population that is increasingly living with multiple chronic conditions and a lower quality of life. Currently, 30% of Portugal’s resident population is over the age of 60, and this percentage continues to rise.

Against this backdrop, it is essential to promote active and healthy aging, ensuring effective management of chronic conditions, preventing unnecessary hospitalizations, and safeguarding the autonomy, well-being, and quality of life of older adults.

Despite the information available, many older adults lack the practical skills and knowledge needed to take care of their health, prevent complications, or effectively manage their chronic conditions.

There is therefore a clear need for structured, accessible initiatives focused on practical application, enabling people to turn information into action and supporting a healthier and more independent life at every age. It is in response to this need that NOVA Medical School has developed this project: Senior Medical School, a Community-Based Participatory Program.

What is it?

The Senior Medical School is a structured response to the challenges of aging and chronic conditions. It transforms health information into practical skills, fostering autonomy and self-management of chronic conditions.

By focusing on health promotion rather than delayed treatment, and ensuring accessibility and practical application in everyday life, the program contributes to active and healthy aging and a better quality of life.

This community-based participatory program stands out for its intergenerational and co-creation model, bringing together older adults, medical and nutrition students, and healthcare professionals. The program is adapted to each community’s resources through municipal structures, incorporating local cultural activities such as theater, music, and dance as tools to promote health, social participation, and well-being.
